Community Magazine . I really appreciated the article on our local struggle heroes, as well as the overview on the diversity of South African cultures.

I also read that two documentary recordings were made of stories from our struggle heroes of the past, and we must salute these people, not only now but always. I have noticed that the Apartheid regime and its association to the freedom struggle have been extensively covered by the writers, but the physical aspect seems to be emphasised more than the emotional side.

There were those laws directly related to emotional trauma, for example, the Immorality and Group Areas Acts, as well as the Pass Laws. The other traumatic laws were those related to inequality, which caused such extreme poverty for the already underprivileged. This is well depicted by the impoverished kitchen with features such as the old primus stove and black iron stove, exhibited at the Red Location Museum.

Perhaps we need documentaries or commentaries to also showcase the freedom struggle to the youth and students who visit our museums.

Edwin Lombard of “Die Son” wrote that, “this generation must know the history of their country. If not, they will have no appreciation of their role in building a better society.” I agree that the youth must make use of available opportunities made possible by “human sacrifce” for them to have inherited a democratic and free country.

The aim is not to use the past as a continued weapon, but to encourage people to grow from it.
