“I trusted in the Lord, and He provided.” In 2006, she won an award, and with the prize money of R10 000 she bought a stove and a generator. This was the start of big things for Jeanny,

because she could fnally realise her dream of feeding the children of her community. Since then, a soup kitchen building was donated by Tiger Brands, and many food sponsors came on board on a regular basis to help keep the soup kitchen going.

“The Lord continues to come through for me and others. I always try to help where I can in my community. I am crazy about these children. Just looking at their faces touches my heart.”

There will always be a need for donations, but so far, Jeanny says she has been blessed to have never been left wanting. And she happens to be as wise, as she is giving and gracious. “I always treat people with dignity, because people do not want to be judged on their circumstances or the area they come from.”

During the day, Jeanny is a healthworker at the Gevandale Clinic, where she administers TB training and treatment and provides HIV/AIDS testing and counselling. She is also a feldworker for Inkosinathi for the Blind, where she provides skills and ability training, counselling and health education.

A Malabar Extension Six resident, Mariam Jooste, said that Jeanny is highly respected and greatly appreciated in the community.

“We don’t know what we would do without her. She is an inspiration to us. She is always there for us, and always will be,” said Jooste.

If you would like to contribute toward Jeanny’s Soup Kitchen, which operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3pm to 5pm, and on public holidays from 12pm to 3pm, contact Jeanny on 083 673 8155.
