“Thank you to the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay for your support in conserving water during the drought,” said Portfolio Chairperson for Infrastructure and Engineering, Cllr Andile Mfunda.
The city’s water supply dams have been restored to almost their full capacity, yet Cllr Mfunda is warning residents to continue to save water.
“It is evident that the citizens of Nelson Mandela Bay are still responding to the call to save water, as the city’s demand is relatively low compared to similarly hot periods in the past when the water consumption was normally at its highest,” said Cllr Mfunda.
During the drought, the Municipality focused on four key areas, and Cllr Mfunda reassured that these focus areas would remain unchanged for now.
The focus areas are water conservation and water demand management, boreholes, the Nooitgedacht Low Level Scheme and the desalination plant.
According to the Director of Water and Sanitation, Barry Martin,
the Nooitgedacht Low
Level Scheme is progressing well and the completion of Phase 1 is scheduled for completion in October 2012, while the completion of Phase 2 is scheduled for July 2013, depending on the availability of funds.
Cllr Mfunda revealed that the desalination plant remained a long-term intervention method that the Municipality was pursuing to secure water availability for the future.
“We have made notable strides in responding to water wastage through the reporting of water leaks to our Service Delivery War Room Centre. Although there has been a great improvement in this area, there is still much more that can be done to improve the situation and also to increase service delivery,” said Cllr Mfunda.
To report water leaks, call the War Room on Service Delivery on 0800 20 5050 to lodge a complaint.
“The Municipality remains committed to conserving our water resources for the future and we call on all citizens to work with us to achieve this goal for the beneft of our future generations,” said Cllr Mfunda.
OUR WATER WILL
ALWAYS REMAIN A PRECIOUS RESOURCE
